Scarlatti wrote many Sonatas for keyboard, and this is one of the early ones, perhaps written after the death of his first wife in 1739. Scarlatti did not indicate a tempo, but the sorrowful nature of the musice suggests a slow, emotional tempo, either Andante or Adagio. The ending of the piece suggests a dying away of the subject first in four voices, then three, then two and finally the last notes played by the low base, likening the lowering of his wife in burial. I find this piece very emotional and for this reason I used the lower recorder grouping of Alto, Tenor and 2 basses.
