Debussy wrote Élégie ("Song of Mourning") in December 1915, while France was suffering from the horrors of the First World War. Originally it was a short piano piece (about 1 1⁄2 minutes), in which the melody played entirely in the lower register. Magnus Byström made this arrangement for the very surprising and not very common combination of double bass flute and piano. It is a gloomy, slow and worn, beautiful and certainly not mundane piece. The double bass flute part is not that difficult in itself, but since almost no one has such an instrument at home by default and therefore cannot practice daily, the piece will be a challenge for everyone. If you do have a double bass flute and can rehearse, it is very worthwhile. Because the double bass flute sounds very soft and low and the onset is therefore not always clear, it is also quite a challenge to get the balance right. In short, a beautiful piece for a special combination!
