The Turbinia was the first ship to be powered by a steam turbine. It was designed and built by Charles Parsons, an Irish engineer, and launched in 1894. He had trouble drawing attention to his ship, and in 1897 resorted to making an unscheduled appearance at the Naval Review for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. More information about the Turbinia is available from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbinia.
