You are purchasing high quality sheet music PDF files suitable for printing or viewing on digital devices. This work began life without a title and it was only after its completion that my thoughts turned to the château of Montségur in southwest France and the brutal events of 1244. A nine-month siege of the château by a royalist army that numbered some 10,000 ended in the surrender and mass burning of over 210 Cathars, the last members of a sect condemned as heretical by the Pope. The original château was destroyed and replaced but the field below where the Inquisition set its bonfires is still a darkly haunted site. I am grateful to Keith Williamson for his encouragement and comments when I was working on completing this piece. It is thanks to his input that I arrived at an extended concluding passage and this work, therefore, carries his name as dedicatee.
