I often like to share Turlough Carolan's music with musicians who are from a classical background but have an interest in traditional Irish music, because his music straddled both worlds. Carolan was a blind itinerant harper who composed mainly for his patrons. At the time, Italian classical and baroque music was very popular among the Irish nobility, and Carolan wanted to prove that he could compose in their style. This piece is the result of this challenge.
