The original aria is for soprano, 2 recorders and figured bass. The secular cantata Was mir behagt was written in 1716 to celebrate the birthday of Duke Christian of Sachsen-Weissenfels. The cantata is in praise of hunting. The text of the aria compares the sense of security felt by a people governed by a wise ruler to that of sheep under the care of an excellent shepherd.
