As a proud Francophile Debussy constantly fought Wagner's musical spell. With Golliwogg's Cakewalk, Debussy took his best shot by turning the Tristan Prelude onto its ear. Golliwogg's now regrettable blackface stereotype came from a successful series of American children's books at the time. The cakewalk likewise parodied the pompous aspects of plantation dances with a cake as the usual prize. I sincerely hope that each of you will judge Debussy's art by the standards of his own time. No one to date has parodied Wagner more effectively.
