This is the second of two hymn-tunes that I composed to mark the departure of two much loved and greatly respected chaplains from Cardiff University. This tune is dedicated to the Reverend Stewart Lisk.
Like its sister composition, this hymn-tune was inspired by fine twentieth-century words (in this case, based on a prayer of St Augustine of Hippo) that are saddled with an old and, in my opinion, not especially appropriate tune in the New English Hymnal. I hope that musicians will find that my tune suits the words well, capturing their mood and ’flavour’.
Although the music was composed to be sung to the hymn ’Light of the minds that know him’ by Timothy Dudley-Smith, musicians are welcome to sing it to other texts in the metre 76 76 D.
If you sing it in your church, please be so kind as to let me know by email.
