This enigmatic and rather mysterious song is the second in a cycle of songs to poems by Thomas Hardy and tells of an evening summer walk in which ghostly footsteps are heard. On pretending to bend and drink from a brook the poet sees a faint figure standing above him. Not knowing what to say he then hears a very tender voice in his ear.
