O mio babbino caro (from Gianni Schicchi) arranged for soprano and small orchestra
This beautiful aria from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi is for many the epitome of Italian opera - in fact, it was famously used as such in the film 'A Room with a View' (1985).
Lauretta (soprano) is twisting her 'beloved Daddy' of the title around her little finger in order to marry the young man of her choice. 'If you don't let me, I'll throw myself into the river Arno'.
The soprano melody, string and harp parts are untouched in this version, but the wind parts have been reduced to single woodwind, horn and trumpet. The arrangment can therefore be performed by as few as 12 players, although it is desirable to have a bigger string body for a richer sound and for the 'divisi' sections.
