Jules Demersseman was the leading flute virtuoso in Paris in his day, according to his untimely obituary in 1866. Demersseman was only 33 when he died but he was already a star performer; and as a composer, he had attracted favorable attention from critics such as Hector Berlioz. Demersseman composed dozens of operatic fantasies for flute and piano. Alas, only a few of them survive today, but those that do survive are superb showpieces. Here is a marvelous fantasy Demersseman concocted out of the delightful melodies from Federico Ricci's now obscure opera Corrado d'Altamura (which just might now re-enter the repertoire after the sensational CD recording by Opera Rara.) In its new garb as a fantasy for solo flute and orchestra, orchestrated by Mark Starr, Demersseman's Fantaisie is an ideal vehicle for both advanced flute students and masters of the instrument who have an opportunity to solo with an orchestra.
