"Equali" are pieces written for an ensemble of identical instruments. For example, in 1812, Beethoven wrote a set of three equali for four trombones. Since these pieces have trombones and a trumpet, they must therefore be "inequali."

The inspiration for the ostinato figure in the trumpet part is rather too embarrassing to admit in public, but it has nothing whatsoever to do with Honegger.
