This was originally a student piece, and an exercise in serial technique. Rather than write a piece for piano, where the advantages of some kind of harmonic support in the 12-note style would be possible, I decided on writing for a single-line instrument, which is always a greater challenge. The piece is sectional yet continuous, but there are sufficient points of repose to allow the oboist time to draw breath. I have tried to contrast the lyrical long-lined character of the instrument with short, staccato phrases. The dedication is to Derek Kitt, a long-time friend and outstanding oboist.
