This march is often called "march of the dwarves", which is not exact. Trolls are (mythological) creatures who live in the forest: big, dumb and very dangerous. When playing Grieg's very famous the march of the trolls (from Lyric pieces op 54 no 3), one must be ironic but threatening. The timber of the clarinet it well suited for that, and having four identical clarinets in Bb allows for interesting spatial effects. The full score uses real pitch, but the parts are in clarinet pitch (and the bass clarinet part uses the treble clef).
