The Desert Flower was Wallace's last opera and was first performed at Covent Garden in 1863. It was revived in New York later that decade but has not been heard since, which is a pity as the music is really interesting. The "Desert Flower" of the title is a Native American princess and the overture contrasts imagined Native American musical themes with music associated with the European settlers. Pretty wild stuff!
