this is one of 12 contrapunctical studies, which the youn Felix Mendelssohn wrote during his studies with his teacher Friedrich Zelter. As Felix works a lutherian hymn (Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern) into his four part fugue, the piece can - with very good effect - be played on the church organ.
