I had long wanted to write my own Paganini variations (doesn't every composer have to do one?!) and also wanted to write a trombone solo, so eventually the two ideas came together to form this piece. Based on the famous 24th Caprice and La Campanella, the piece explores the instrument without making the piece notoriously difficult. (Just surprisingly difficult!)
