Alla Marcia in D Major (Slippin' the Sloop) for Concert Orchestra
I wanted to write a piece which utilises a percussion section. The base line of this piece had been running around inside my head for some time and, when I finally sat down at the keyboard the basic idea of this march was formed and I bashed out the entire piece on the keyboard in a single sitting. It is not an actual marching band piece, but is scored for a Concert band. Should I need to refine it down any further the string section can be replaced by a grouping of Clarinets.
The piano version is the original working idea. It was easy to extend the idea into an orchestral or mixed band setting. I was born into a military family and I remember that as a small child in my pram I was often taken to the parade square to listen to the marching band rehearsing.
