This piece has, perhaps, a programme. A driver and his horse-drawn cart are heading steadily home through the countryside. They pass into a menacing and darkening wood and emerge into the meadows again before, at a slower pace, they draw into their welcoming home yard. Try to convey this picture with a steady legato, gentle vibrato and little rubato. Use plenty of piano pedal to sustain the minims in the bass.Since publication the piano part has been edited for some small errors and the separate oboe part added. Apologies!
