The Wendigo for Brass Quartet
Wendigo: In the mythology of Northern Algonquins, an evil sprit; one of a fabulous tribe of cannibals. (Websters Unabridged Dictionary.)
Originally commissioned for the a cappella SATB theme of a national Halloween Festival, Sibelius rejected the score because of the lyrics of the piece, penned by Ogden Nash (who hasn't been alive for decades and who's estate said I could use the lyrics.) Anyway, as a primarily BRASS composer, the piece lent itself to a brass quartet, even if the wonderfully image-rich lyrics do not make an appearance.
