Symphony No 05 1st movement
This symphony was composed in the short space of three weeks in the summer of 1981. It was commissioned by the Sidmouth Festival and was first performed there by the Bournemouth Sinfonietta conducted by the composer. The first movement combines both first-movement and scherzo forms, but with unified thematic material. The elegiac second movement is followed by an energetic finale. The orchestra used is classical in size - a sharp contrast to the composer’s previous Wine Symphony (no 4) written for an orchestra of enormous proportions.
