Osborn hAimirgn (1872-1950), a renowned Gaelic scholar who taught at University College, Cork, wrote the familiar words to this tune(he also wrote the lovely poem ’Maidean i mBara’ to the tune of the Derry Air) which has been adopted as the Official Anthem of An Taoiseach. This arrangement was originally written for the Preparatory orchestra at Cork School of Music (strings only), the wind parts being added later to enable other students to join in profitably. It should be played as a dignified march.
