Home > Solo instrument > Songs of the Reef - 8 Octo-Pieces for Young Guitarists (with TAB)

These pieces were all written for very young guitarists I teach in Primary school. My youngest current pupils are in Y3 (grade 2) so the remit I gave myself was to include lots of octaves for recognition of high, low and bass ranges, to keep the pieces easy by avoiding nasty stretches, and to include note name noteheads in a large font. The pieces themselves had to be fun and are loosely themed on the sea and a guitar playing octopus…. Hence Octo-Pieces! (Octopus, octo-piece,octave…. and of course there had to be eight of them!)

Later pieces are a little harder and include some higher notes, harmonics and interesting effects. I hope teachers will find them useful, I know my pupils enjoy playing them without the TAB. A print on demand version (traditional notation only) with a beautifully drawn guitar-playing Octopus on the cover is available on:

Which method of viewing music should I use?

Score Exchange has two methods to display previews of music: seView which uses regular html and javascipt and the Scorch plug-in from Avid which needs to be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Both have advantages and disadvantages:

seView

seView, is the most compatible option. You should be able to view music on all modern web browsers including most mobile devices. Even if your device does not support javascript you should still be able to preview at least page one of the music.

You do not need to install any additional software to use seView.

Scorch

Scorch is a free plug-in from Avid for displaying and printing music. It can also play the music that you're seeing. As modern web browsers are updated, Scorch is no longer compatible with many browsers. Scorch has never been compatible with mobile devices and some web browsers on Mac computers.

If your web browser does not install Scorch automatically, you can click here to download and install scorch manually.
