This first movement of three was inspired by the opening words of "Crossing the Bar" by Alfred Lord Tennyson: "Sunset and evening song/and one clear call for me/and may there be no moaning of the bar/when I put out to sea." The somewhat mournful chanty is followed by a spirited jig.
