The intended sense is of an optimistic solo clarinet trying to cheer up a rather sad orchestra. The strings continually repeat sad minor themes, but eventually respond to the insistent soloist and become brighter towards the end. Convincingly delivering the contrast in mood between the clarinet and orchestra and the subsequent interplay between the two is the real challenge for the performers here.
