Which method of viewing music should I use?

This little-known piece is from Tchaikovsky's set of 16 Songs for Children, Op.54. It has a haunting theme and is a personal favourite amongst the Christmas Carol repertoire.

This arrangement features a supplemental third violin part with an additional bass part for use with string orchestra.
