At the jail, Lockit rages over MacHeath's escape. He suspects that Peachum is trying to outsmart him and plans a trip to Peachum's Lock (a warehouse of stolen goods) to discuss the matter. There he and Peachum entertain Mrs Diana Trapes, a madam, who, after a few drinks, reveals MacHeath's whereabouts.
