Autumn (2010) is a brass quintet in three movements. It seeks to embody the season. One must appreciate the indecisive weather and the elusive, chilling sunshine that are reminiscent of autumn; the surprises that the season holds upon waking up and gazing out the window. There might be a sheet of soaked leaves over the ground, or a clear, blue sky revealing the distant sunrise over the end of the world. Then again, one may look out and see nothing. The clouds have come to visit, and they wrap themselves around our world to give us a glimpse of what it's like up there. Perhaps a congregation of leaves dances by as one admires the scene, breaking the trance. The cold winds push the ordinary and bring warnings of change. You will hear all of this represented through sound. Close your eyes and watch. It is a story, above all. A story full of all the imagery, metaphors, and beautiful diction that not only create, but help to define a season.
