Composer Luigi Gordigiani's original scoring was for Soprano solo, in the key of D-flat. Modest Mussorgsky set the piece for two voices. The text comes from the Gospel of Matthew, inspired by the loping-style of the music, which reminded me of a donkey's pace. As was foretold, Jesus Christ chose this mode of transport for His triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. I re-arranged the voicing to best suit the limitations of my small church choir.
