The sonata has three movements: an allegro with slow introduction, a very slow two part invention, and a fiery allegro which ends with a reprise of the introduction to the first movement. It is written in a contemporary idiom of melodically driven atonality and ranges between unbounded energy in the fast sections and profundity in the middle movement.
