The vibrant city of New Orleans is famous as the home of Dixieland jazz, and as the port at the mouth of the Mississippi River. These two elements dominate this movement. An energetic opening portrays the bustle on the levee. The tempo and style switches to pure New Orleans jazz, which was everywhere to be heard in the French Quarter. A stately journey along the Mississippi in a paddle-steamer rises to a majestic climax. This is followed by a quiet, whimsical tune inspired by the lesser known quarter called Algiers on the opposite side of the river. The rousing coda combines the jazz of the Vieux Carré with the paddle-steamer river theme.
