I studied John Donne’s "A Hymn to God the Father" for O level English and have since then loved Donne’s poetry. As a first year choral scholar, Lennox Berkley’s setting of Donne’s "Thou Hast Made Me" stood out as one of the few 20th century anthems I "got" and this stands as the inspiration for my setting of "A Hymn to God the Father". I started the setting as long ago as 1997 and, as happens sometimes with no possibility of a performance in sight, the handwritten score is not completed and eventually gets lost, only to resurface 15 years later. On a wet, miserable July afternoon in Edinburgh in 2012 I finally got round to completing the score. I’ll admit that I am not 100% happy with the ponderous organ part moving so often in parallel minims but it sort of fits the mood of trudging through life with this burden of sin that Donne makes so explicit in his text. Anyhow, hopefully it will be performed one day…
