The year is 1336, one year before the start of The Hundred Years War. A simple teenage shepherd boy tends his sheep with his father in the French hills as they guide their herd to the markets of medieval Carcassonne. Together they dream of life as French noblemen, imagining the riches, the dancing, the life of leisure. As they approach the castle city walls, they hear old tunes that they each sang as young children. Upon entering the massive gates, they are confronted with the hectic pace and confusion of a thriving city - merchants dickering, town criers shouting the news, and the local duke summoning his noble courtiers for a ceremony. It is a memorable event to both father and son - one that will last for generations, retold down through the ages, and a memory that will sustain hope for a family that will soon suffer through a long, dark period of war.
