I was speaking on the phone to my brother about my recent experience singing about Elijah going to heaven in a fiery chartiot.
He burst into song with Cronos The Charioteer, with which I was totally unfamiliar.
He had been required to sing it in a school performance c. 1965, but has kept this from me for the past 60 years!
Fascinated I searched the internet and discovered it was composed by Franz Schubert, but could initially find only German versions.
After searching for the English language arrangement I eventually found ScoreExchange, and am now in possession of the pdf download.
It is an excellent song, humorously charting the progress from vigorous youth to decrepit dotage and the inevitable end of life, similar to Shakespeare’s Seven Ages of Man in a Greek mythology setting.
The translation is a bit clunky in places, but the music score is a good representation of Schubert’s original.
