The accompanying MP3 features my concert-band arrangement, performed by Stadtmusik Biel with Stephan Gräub as the euphonium soloist.
The origins of the csárdás can be traced to the 18th-century Hungarian verbunkos, a recruiting dance used by the Hungarian army. It is characterised by dramatic contrasts in tempo, beginning slowly and expressively before accelerating to a brilliant and exhilarating conclusion.
Many classical composers—including Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, Johann Strauss, Pablo de Sarasate and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky—incorporated csárdás themes into their music. The best-known example is Vittorio Monti’s virtuosic concert showpiece, originally composed for violin and piano.
This exciting arrangement is ideal for recitals, concerts, examinations and competitions. Versions for Euphonium and Baritone are also available, together with arrangements for many other solo instruments and ensembles.
