This song setting for Baritone voice and Piano of the poem by Longfellow encapsulate the spirit of Christmas in which the poet on hearing the bells at Christmas is reminded of the scripture "peace on Earth, goodwill to men". However on reflection he realises that there is a lot of hate in the world and not a lot of goodwill; but the bells peal even louder and he is reassured that God has not forsaken man by sending Christ to Earth at Christmas.
