Improvisation is a fast paced, exciting work. The instrumentation is highly unusual. Placing the overpowering sound of a tuba against the more contemporary sounds of a clarinet, oboe and piano sounds quite bizarre, but the way the piece is constructed ensures that the piece remains balanced (I hope!). In a sense, however, when the tuba does sound out of place it simply adds to the humour of the piece!
