L'Ouverture di Rienzi, l'ultimo dei tribuni (WWV 49) è uno dei brani orchestrali più celebri e monumentali di Richard Wagner, composto tra il 1837 e il 1840. Rappresenta il primo vero grande successo del compositore tedesco, eseguito per la prima volta al Königliches Hoftheater di Dresda il 20 ottobre 1842.
L'ouverture sintetizza i conflitti drammatici e i temi principali dell'opera, muovendosi nello stile sfarzoso della grand opéra francese. Si articola in tre elementi chiave:
Il richiamo della tromba: Il brano si apre con una singola nota sostenuta della tromba, che rappresenta il segnale di rivolta del popolo romano contro i nobili oppressori.
La preghiera di Rienzi: Segue un tema lirico e solenne eseguito dagli archi, basato sulla celebre aria del quinto atto (Allmächt'ger Vater), in cui il protagonista Cola di Rienzi invoca la protezione divina per Roma.
L'energia della rivoluzione: La sezione conclusiva si sviluppa in un Allegro energico travolgente, caratterizzato da ritmi di marcia militare e squilli di ottoni che celebrano i trionfi e i tumulti della battaglia.
