This piece is an evocation of ideas relating to a particular tree. The tree now has no natural predators. Its
genetic history is 380 million years old. The Chinese used it for its medicinal properties and it is still used to-day as a herbal remedy.
The form of the music is the Passacaglia: a main theme
which recurs, alternating with what Couperin would have called couplets and are variations on the material of the main theme.
