Three Pieces for Violin and Piano "song and dance…"are a lively, heartening, and mostly light hearted grouping of three pieces:
I. Shantey Bagatelle – jumps right in without preamble, a current of F-sharp minor melancholy lurking behind the jaunty bluster of a sailor’s song.
II. Cutting the Rug: Dance in Octaves – an antic dance, high stepping with angular bursts of energy, brings an etched modernist line into the disciplined movements of the dance you might imagine cubist figures would make.
III. Quodlibet Romp – a humorous piece in which well-known melodies are combined in an advisedly incongruous manner starting off with a wittily observed melodic connection between the elegant slow movement of Beethoven’s Tempest Sonata and the rollicking theme from Hanna Barbera’s cartoon classic The Flinstones.
A recording of this piece is available on CD from the Centaur label and on Amazon.
