Walter Paul "Woody" English was an American tuba player and composer. He was associated with circus bands throughout his life and was a good friend of the march king Karl King. In 1984, English was elected to the (Circus Band) Windjammer's Hall of Fame.

His scoring of marches tend to accomodate the bands he was playing with at the time and he favoured high woodwinds to lead his ideas. As far as I know, this is the first time any of his marches have been scored for brass band. He has a sense of fun in his compositions with a slight lean towards Sousa in his melodic content. I like Volitant because of it's angular main theme and contrasting broad melodic trio section. Should be fun to play as well to listen to! Wee amendments may be made from time to time.
