The Piano Sonatina uses a Hauer trope created from the opening few chords of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in C minor op. 13. It uses seial techniques to explore thematic aspects of the Beethoven sonata, and reflects upon it by a means of direct quotation and tone-row extension. The piece is in one movement of contrasting speed and dynamic, but is broadly in three parts, opening and closing with an unambiguous reference to Beethoven's own sonata.
