Il bianco e dolce cigno, cantando more
ed io piangendo giung' al fin del viver mio.
Stran' e diversa sorte,
ch'ei more sconsolato,
ed io moro beato.
Morte che nel morire,
m'empie di gioia tutt'e di desire.
Se nel morir', altro dolor non sento,
di mille morte il di sarei contento.
For this movement particular knowledge of various historical 'swan' themes and of renaissance and early baroque interpretation are helpful.
The swan, with all it's contexts appears here… in the theme yet in the baroque original vocal form, with a few extensions only; in the 1st variation only the bass recorder reminds of the madrigal, while the strings are building up sort of distance; the 2nd variation is experimenting and only few tears of the Arcadelts original remain flagrantly visible.
Enjoy!
