WS Gilbert deals with two philosophical problems in this opera: what would men be like as Gods? and if one is a chairman or manager of a firm why can't one be "one of the lads" on the shop floor. The events of the opera show that the answer to the first questiom is that men as Gods would be a disaster. The answer to the second is that if you try to be "one of the lads" they will take you to the cleaners.
