This song is from a set of ironic poems by Thomas Hardy which he called Satires Of Circumstance. It is set here for Soprano and Piano and tells of a conversation betweena newly wed couple on their first night of marriage. The bride comments on a tune the band are playing downstairs, and the groom adds that it's only the wedding guests enjoying themselves celebrating their wedding. The bride replies that the tune is much more important to her as it was the tune that she and a previous lover used to dance to, She says that when they danced she swore that no-one else but her dance partner would share her kisses and it is he that she pretends she is kissing when her new husband is embracing her.
