It is for Bass voice with piano accompaniment. On his death-bed a man confesses to murdering the husband of his lover by shooting him and burying the body. The dead man had suspected his wife's infidelity and had come home unexpectedly from the war to find the wife with her lover. After burying the body the confessor arranged to go to the war scene, having heard of a great battle. He sends word home that the husband, now reported missing, has been killed and his body has been registered not known.
