William Croft (1678-1727) wrote sonatas, keyboard music, songs and theatre music, but he is best known today for his church music. He was organist at Westminster Abbey from 1708 until his early death in 1727. The hymn-tune "St Anne" (O God, our help in ages past) is attributed to him. "Croft's 136th" appeared in Playford's "Divine Companion" (1707) where it was used to set Psalm 136. Philip Doddridge (1702-1751) was a Minister to Independent congregations and his hymns were closely tied to his dissenting theology.
