John Stainer's "The Crucifixion" (1887), a Passion setting designed for parish use, included this tune, set to the words "Cross of Jesus, Cross of sorrow". The tune is often used with the words of the advent hymn, "Come, thou long-expected Jesus", written by Charles Wesley (1707-1788) and first published in 1744.
