St Mary’s Church Chesterfield
Legend has it that the devil rested there, hence its crooked spire
Hence crooked bells
The folk song "The Derby Ram" is alluded to frequently.
Orchestration

Jules Riley is Derbyshire born and Chesterfield bred etc. etc. Chesterfield - the town of the crooked spire whose motto proudly boasts a colourful cock and magpie with the single motivic word "Aspire!".
Apart from being one of the worst plays on words ever dreamed up, this is how the overture derived its name.
Synopsis
After the opening slightly crooked aspirational music describing the spire, we are introduced to one of our main protagonists - the Derby ram slightly morose, dreamy. Then as the music quickens, the devil is let loose to cause mayhem, create havoc in the bell tower which never quite recovers.
In vain the Derby ram tries to restore order with a gentle calming horn quartet. Then in the concluding section the aspirational theme rises and rises to the sound of the slightly odd-sounding bells.
Finally though, it would seem that the brave Derbyshire tup is doomed to never quite make it, and the devil has the last laugh.
