Primal Rush is a short one-movement piece in five different sections that consists of a harmony; stated using an isorhythm in the first section. The harmony is later transfigured throughout other sections using transposition and rhythmic diminution. The entire piece, in its most basic form, is a harmonic palindrome, with the middle section material referencing Gb pentatonic and C major scales. The outer sections have a recurring intervalic motif, a minor second and minor third, that is usually stated in the beginning of each melodic figure; though, sometimes masked within layers of contrapuntal writing.
